Bristol Schumacher Conference 2008 Bristol Council House, College Green 11 October
Can we Really Live Better by Consuming Less? 30th Anniversary of Fritz Schumacher’s death Saturday 11 Oct 2008, 9.45am - 6pm
This conference will be chaired by Jonathon Porritt, Founder Director of Forum for the Future, and the theme, “Less is More”, will explore whether it is possible to consume less and lead better lives. The day will consist of a lecture, debates, workshops and practice sessions lead by “advocates for change” and “leading practitioners”.
The advocates for change will include Bill McKibben, author and educator, who will open the proceedings with a lecture entitled, 350 ppm CO2 & The Quest for Human Satisfaction. This will be followed by contributions from:
Eugenie Harvey, Co-founder of We Are What We Do; Simon Hooton, Director of Policy and Strategy at the South West Regional Development Agency;
Rob Hopkin, Founder of the Transition Towns movement; Paul Kingsnorth, Author of One No, Many Yeses, the Anti Globalisation and Global Resistance book;
John Naish, author of Enough, Breaking Free from the World of More;
Ann Pettifor, executive director of Advocacy International;
Andrew Simms, Policy Director and head of Climate Change of the New Economics Foundation,
Solitaire Townsend, Chief Executive and Co-founder of Futerra. Also participating will be organisations making change happen on the ground, such as the Soil Association, Sustrans, Forum for the Future’s Sustainable Bristol project, The Converging World, Young Bristol and the Bristol Food Hub. A Schumacher Award will also be presented at the Conference. This event will contribute to the discussions around climate change, worsening injustice, peak oil, the credit crunch, food security, health inequalities and resource wars. Jointly organized by the Schumacher Society and Forum for the Future, it is aimed at the general public and organisations and individuals who are responsible for making the necessary changes to tackle issues mentioned above.
