At the beginning of November 2008, the First European Human Forum was held at the World Trade Centre in Barcelona. 500 individuals of 35 different nationalities were brought together to discuss such issues as sustainability, social justice, education, growth, and social, economic and organisational development. The forum was inaugurated by Deepak Chopra and included a number of influential speakers from all over the world. Over the course of the three days, a number of plenary sessions, interactive dialogues and workshops were held.
Deepak Chopra, President of the Alliance for a New Humanity explained that "It was not our their intention to legislate, but to change consciousness. We need to create networks in the area of communication, entertainment, education and sport."
At the conclusion of the conference proposals for the future were discussed. The importance of self-awareness as the essential condition towards global consciousness and the need to change the world through a new system of values and education were all deemed to be of great importance. Looking towards the next forum held in San Diego, guidelines were conceived to create new work teams within companies, environmentally sustainable events and networks to generate change.
Those 500 people who attended took a vow to assume commitment to
non-violence in their thoughts, words and actions. The goal of the
Alliance for a New Humanity then became to create a global movement
that would mobilise 100 million people to make the same commitment.
