Watch The Birdie

Jan 26, 2010
Positive News Issue
Small domestic wind turbines suitable for home use and small business premises are naturally a good sustainable solution for future energy supplies but historically opposition has been raised because of environmental drawbacks such as noise and the impact on bird populations.

Rooftop locations make the bird problem a key issue with conservationists and could lead to a poor uptake on small scale wind turbines in certain areas.  This is where a group called Windation Energy Systems stepped in - their latest turbine is not only easy to install, with a twenty five year guarantee and can save around 13 metric tonnes of CO2 emissions each year it also is completely bird friendly.

The turbine propellers that can be so damaging to birds in flight are shielded away behind a grill or gauze and the airflow is channelled into the grill by the shape of the frame that supports the turbine.

Its manufacturers are keen to point out that it is important that such solutions are taken up more widely - light and power use within our buildings accounts for 40% of the world's overall energy usage. Because of this our buildings produce 21% of all global CO2 emissions. Domestic and small business wind turbines could curb this considerably. By removing one of the main dangers of rooftop appliances, by shielding the main moving parts, they have made them safer both for people and for our small feathered friends.
