The Observer Ethical Awards, in association with Ecover, have launched for 2010. Now in their fifth year, the awards pay tribute to the great and the green. If you have an ethical initiative, project or product this could be your chance to shine. In previous years the awards have attracted a diverse selection of winners from politicians such as Ken Livingstone and Caroline Lucas to community projects such as Lomeshaye Marsh Local Nature Reserve Stockbridge Junior Rangers, winners of the Ethical Kids award and bursary.
Lucy Siegle, Ethical Living Correspondent, The Observer and chair of the judging panel said, ‘It has never been more important to stand up and take positive action. The new decade is about individuals, communities and businesses fighting for environmental and social justice. The disappointment of Copenhagen illustrates what happens when we devolve the responsibility to politicians and process. Fortunately the real green innovation and dynamism is to be found in the people up and down the country who, over the last 12 months, have really effected change, not just talked about it! There are some fantastic ethical champions in the UK and we can’t wait to hear from them.’
The organisers are looking for companies and individuals that strive to make a difference, that have an innovative way of looking at ethical issues and those who create practical solutions to these problems. You can nominate your favourite green gods and goddesses for: campaigner of the year, politician of the year, online retailer and local retailer. Those that nominate will be entered into a draw to win a Warren Evans bed, a rail break to Provence courtesy of Explore, cosmetic gift sets and an organic food hamper.
Mick Bremans, Ecover MD said: “It's an honour to be able to recognise those work to make day to day ethical living accessible and achievable, and once again we look forward to receiving some interesting, inspiring entries in 2010.”
The judging panel includes: Colin Firth; Ben Fogle, TV presenter; Iwan Thomas, Olympic athlete; Bonnie Wright, actress; Rick Edwards, T4 presenter; Sue Perkins, comedian and presenter; Ben Okri, poet and novelist; Deborah Meaden, businesswoman and Dragon’s Den star; Kate Humble, TV presenter and Jo Wood of Jo Wood Organics. The judges will vote on the seven remaining categories: grassroots projects, fashion and accessories sponsored by Marie Claire, ethical business, ethical kids, Jupiter big idea and conservation.
The deadline for entries is the 12 March 2010 and the winners will be announced at a ceremony in London later in the year.
