Powering the Low Carbon Economy
Electricity’s role in decarbonizing energy use
1-2 March 2010 | Chatham House, London

What steps can be taken to decarbonise electricity within a dramatically short timescale?

How will governments and business respond to continued policy uncertainty, post-Copenhagen?
In order to achieve significant emissions cuts, a rapid transformation in the way that power is used, generated and managed is required. This conference will take a clear look at the future of energy use, and the changing role that electricity will have in creating a low carbon future, focusing on:
    •    The prospects for energy sector investments in an uncertain policy environment
    •    How power systems - generation, networks, and user-technologies - will need to change in order to become less carbon intensive
    •    What new technologies are emerging and how quickly they can be developed to scale
    •    What constraints exist at a global level
    •    What political and policy challenges need to be addressed

EcoBuild
2-4 March
Earls Court London

With over 1000 exhibitors and hundreds of new product launches Ecobuild is definitely the place to visit.  The Ecobuild conference focuses on emerging issues, new thinking, challenging ideas. For 2010, there is much to assess and debate: the progress made in putting sustainability at the core of construction and the built environment: the future direction the sector needs to take: how quickly and with what impact and to what effect.

New at this year's event is the Ecobuild Fringe Programme bringing together a variety of events from exhibitors, supporters and partners, all taking place in or around Earls Court during Ecobuild.

Also at the event there will be the Breeam Awards.  BRE Global will be presenting the BREEAM Awards in the Arena on Wednesday 03 March. The BREEAM Awards recognise and reward those involved in the design and construction of the highest scoring buildings certified under BREEAM. A BREEAM ‘excellent’ rating is a pre-qualification, which ensures that winners truly represent exemplary sustainable design and construction. Each development will have been independently assessed and certified, and in order to win an award, each building must have excelled in every environmental category – from energy to ecology - and represent an holistic approach to delivering environmental sustainability. Awards will be presented to the top rated buildings in the UK, together with a number of special awards in an international category.

World Forestry Day
March 21
Worldwide

World Forestry Day has been celebrated around the world to ring a bell among the society about the importance of forests and the scores of benefits which are gained from them. The concept of celebrating a day every year as World Forestry Day originated at the 23rd General Assembly of the European Confederation of Agriculture in 1971.

The event also venerates the contribution of the forests. Every year March 21 is distinguished as World Forestry Day.
World Forestry Day
A forest just doesn’t mean trees only but it’s an entire complex, living community.

Many interdependent populations of plants and animals too dwell beneath the forest canopy; the forest soil is a home to large variety of invertebrates, bacteria and fungi which play an essential role in cycling nutrients in the soil and the forest.

Throughout the world many groups and individuals will be making the day with a variety of events  that raise awareness of the need to protect, replenish and sustain our forests.

WWD 2010: Communicating water quality challenges and opportunities
Every year, 1,500 cubic kilometres of wastewater are produced globally. While waste and wastewater can be reused productively for energy and irrigation, it usually is not. In developing countries 80 percent of all waste is being discharged untreated, because of lack of regulations and resources. And population and industrial growth add new sources of pollution and increased demand for clean water to the equation. Human and environmental health, drinking and agricultural water supplies for the present and future are at stake, still water pollution rarely warrants mention as a pressing issue.

To do something about that UN-Water has chosen Communicating Water Quality Challenges and Opportunities as theme for World Water Day 2010. The overall goal of the World Water Day on 22 March 2010 campaign is to raise the profile of water quality at the political level so that water quality considerations are made alongside those of water quantity.

Compost Awareness Week
2-8 May
UK

This year, Compost Awareness Week will take place between 2-8 May 2010. The theme is 'Give it a Grow' and aims to encourage us all to try something different, and extend our behaviour into new activities.

Although around thirty percent of us already compost at home, there are lots more things we can all try. For example, around 60% of people say they have never tried composting general household waste, such as scrunched up paper or the contents from a vacuum cleaner, and around fifty percent of people have never tried using peat-free compost.
ICM research conducted for WRAP in March 2009.

However you choose to get involved, there are plenty of new things you can try, which will not only help the environment but also help your garden grow greener. Here are just some of the things you could try this Compost Awareness Week.
    •    New to composting? Why not give composting a go. Anyone with outside space can compost at home. Contact your local authority to check if they sell compost bins, or try any garden centre or DIY store
    •    Already a compost champion? Think about additional things you could compost, such as eggs shells, tea bags or even the contents from your vacuum cleaner. Check the list of compostable items.
    •    Don't know what to do with your compost? Try using your homemade compost to enrich your borders or to give your potted plants and containers an extra boost
    •    Ever tried peat-free compost? It's made from recycled materials - and that's good news for the environment because it helps to cut down the amount of organic waste that is sent to landfill
    •    Fancy being a wormery wonder? Wormeries are ideal for people who don't produce garden waste or have limited outside space. Small amounts of garden waste can go into a wormery, together with some cooked food scraps.
